ESEP’s Science Policy Webinars

Interested in organizing a webinar with the ESEP Coalition?

A webinar series from ESEP partners, the Journal of Science Policy and Governance and AAAS

Supported by the Kavli Foundation, this webinar series is being organized to coincide with JSPG and AAAS’s joint call for policy position papers which will invite students, post-docs, policy fellows, and early career researchers to consider ways we can reimagine American science by building on and from Vannevar Bush’s Science: the Endless Frontier. These webinars will engage thought leaders from science policy to share their perspectives on where U.S. science policy could be enhanced across five thematic areas.

 2019-2020 Webinar Series

Held in partnership with the National Science Policy Network, the Union of Concerned Scientists, and the Journal for Science Policy and Governance.

FEBRUARY WEBINAR
Big Money, Big Dreams: Where Could We Be Investing in the U.S. S&T Budget
Date: Thursday, February 20, 2020
Time: 3:00 - 4:00 PM Eastern Time

The complexity and size of the U.S. S&T budget makes it a difficult task to strategize investments and progress. On February 20th, 3 pm EST, join us for a panel conversation titled Big Money, Big Dreams: Where Could We Be Investing in the U.S. S&T Budget? Panelists Maryann Feldman, former Science of Science and Innovation Policy (SciSIP) Program Director at the National Science Foundation, and Matt Hourihan, director of the R&D Budget and Policy Program for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), will discuss their perspectives on how the S&T budget could look like, in an ideal world. The event will be moderated by Mike Waring is Executive Director of Federal Relations for the University of Michigan.

For those interested in delving into the weeds a bit prior, Matt Hourihan recently published with the Day One Project a white paper titled "Ambitious, Achievable, and Sustainable: A Blueprint for Reclaiming American Research Leadership"

NOVEMBER WEBINAR
Go Far, Go Together: Starting and Sustaining Science Policy Groups
Date: Thursday, November 21, 2019
Time: 3:00 - 4:00 PM Eastern Time

Science policy as a discipline is quickly gaining traction as both a viable non-academic career path, and a valuable set of skills needed for academic researchers to serve as advocates for their work and understand the greater societal context surrounding science. However, many students passionate about policy find themselves without the surrounding local network of like-minded scientists and resources that a student-led science policy group can provide. What is one to do when left on such an island? Why, create their own group of course! Tune in to gain the tools and insight you need to start a group of your own and gather your tribe for your journey into science policy.
